HOW TO FIND YOUR INNER VOICE is an installation consisting of two loudspeakers, a number of flyers, and an electric fan. The sound coming from the speakers is based on direct recordings of the artist’s own internal body sounds, such as breathing, borborygmi, and the heartbeat. The flyers present on one side an online motivational quote about “finding one’s inner voice”, and on the other, an image from the artist’s personal archive. The flyers are free to be taken away or played with by the public.
Finding one’s own voice is, as one of the quotes states, to embrace one’s “inner leader”, to be one’s true and original self. The expression is, therefore, usually associated with the problem of authenticity, which is then directly linked to the quest for personal freedom and success. But does such an authentic, free, uncon- ditioned voice exist?
In our late-capitalist society, workers are encouraged to self-manage, to be their own bosses. This thin veil of self-determination is in reality the subterfuge of exploitation. By taking the quotes out of context and combining them with the artist’s literal, embodied inner voice, the work aims to reveal the ambiguities of this kind of language surrounding the body, shining a light on its condition in the age of the homo oeconomicus.
