THAT WHICH IS NEVER SEEN FROM THE EARTH
Video, 2023

Our bodies are the interface through which we primarily feel the world and ourselves. Through our senses we mediate every phenomenon; the totality of our experience is regulated and limited by them. Our body, however, cannot be simply reduced to an interface through which we feel: we are our body. The separation between mind and flesh has been a long-lasting Western delusion.

Using this illusive dichotomy as a starting point, THAT WHICH IS NEVER SEEN FROM THE EARTH presents an eerie and phantasmal exploration of our insides, that part of ourselves which is never seen from the earth. The video has been shot not inside a real human, but a plastic dummy used by gastroenterologists as a way to pracice real esophagogastroduodenoscopies. The clean and shiny surfaces are an abstraction: the idealised construction of perfect, imagined bowels. Using an online tool that translates pictures into sounds, the image of a real gastroscopy of the artist’s stomach is transformed into a melody evoking a mysterious, sci-fi atmosphere. Finally, through the combination with extracts from Jules Verne’s novel From the Earth to the Moon (1865), the work blurs the boundaries between the flesh and the outside world, be that a dark cave or the imagined lunar surface. Each element of the work speaks of the bodily relationship between inside and outside, fiction and reality.
