We looked in vain at the darkness (2023)
Essay published in the issue Ombra by TBD Magazine

We looked in vain at the darkness.

“Through an examination of visual technology in the medical environment and its links with figures such as the famous illusionist Harry Houdini, the text 'We looked in vain at the darkness. Modernity, Guts, Sword-Eaters' by Simone Molinari opens the book and explores the intertwining of the clinical, magical and esoteric at the origins of contemporary medicine. For a long time, the human body, inscrutable in vivo, was one of the darkest and most remote places on earth. The first attempt at gastroscopy literally shed light on the inside: the first gastroscopes illuminated the viscera, albeit dimly, and at the same time heralded the advent of body imaging.”
